Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kïĺ (winter). Cognate with Chuvash хӗл (hĕl), Turkish kış, Uzbek qish, Bashkir ҡыш (qış), Old Turkic 𐰶𐰃𐱁 (qïš), Yakut кыс (kıs).
