Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Mordvinic *jondəl, traditionally considered a compound of a descendant of Proto-Finno-Permic [Finno-Volgaic] *juma (god) and Proto-Mordvinic *tol (fire). Alternatively, the first component is from Proto-Mordvinic *jon (side) or Proto-Uralic *ilma (sky, weather, god).
