From *yāzuq (sin, wrongdoing), from Proto-Turkic *yāŕ- (to mistake; to commit a sin).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (jazuq, sin, wrongdoing); Tatar язык (yazıq), Kazakh жазық (jazyq), Kyrgyz жазык (jazık), Southern Altai јазык (ǰazïk), Uzbek yoziq, Khakas чазых (çazıx), Turkmen ýazyk (sin, wrongdoing), Turkish yazık (pity, regret).

    Һалып бирелгән ризыҡты ҡалдырырға ярамай, яҙыҡ була, хужаны ихтирам итмәү һанала.
    Halıp birelgən rizıqtı qaldırırğa yaramay, yaźıq bula, xujanı ixtiram itməw hanala.
    One should not leave (any of the) served food - (this is) a sin, is considered disrespect for the host.
