Inherited from Old Ruthenian ящорка (jaščorka), from Old East Slavic *ꙗщеръка (*jaščerŭka), from Proto-Slavic *aščerъka. By surface analysis, я́шчар (jáščar) +‎ -ка (-ka). Cognate with Russian я́щерка (jáščerka) and Ukrainian я́щірка (jáščirka).
