[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *jarovъ, from *jaro (“spring”). Constructed as if from *яр (*jar) + -ово́й (-ovój); compare dialectal яр (jar, “heat, fire”), Old East Slavic ꙗра (jara, “spring”). First attested in the 14th century.
