From Proto-Turkic *yaman (bad).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (jaman, bad); Kazakh жаман (jaman), Karakalpak жаман (jaman) / jaman, Kyrgyz жаман (jaman), Karachay-Balkar аман (aman), Uzbek yomon, Azerbaijani, Turkish yaman, etc.

From Proto-Mongolic *ïmaxan cognate with Khitan 𘱑𘯺 (*êm a), related through borrowing or inheritance with Proto-Turkic *ïmga.

Compare Mongolian ямаа (jamaa), Old Turkic 𐰢𐰍𐰀 ((a)mɣa).
