From Proto-Permic *juni, from Proto-Uralic *jëxe-. Cognates include Northern Mansi аюӈкве (aûňkve) and Finnish juoda.

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian юны (juny) and Komi-Permyak юны (juny).
