Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Turkic *ir-. Cognate with Old Turkic ïrq, ïrïm ("prediction", "fate", "guessing")[1] and irü ("sign", "omen").[2]

Formed by nominative affix -(a)z from the verb *ir- belonging to the homogeneous series with ырық ("power", "will", "right") (yryq / yrq), and ырым (yrym) ("belief", "superstition").

Uncertain whether the word ырыс is related to words äriz, äräz and äräč, meaning "calm", "tranquility".

More initial forms of the base having final -z noted in Old Uzbek (G. Vámbéry) and in L. Budagov's dictionary. The common form with final -s formed later.[3]
