[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle Mongol ᠱᠦᠯᠡᠨ (šülen), from Proto-Mongolic *silö (“meat broth, soup”), probably deriving from or otherwise related with Proto-Turkic *söl (“juice”).
Compare Dongxiang shulie (“broth”), Kazakh сөл (söl) and possible Tungusic cognates such as Nanai чо̄лон (čōlon, “soup”) and Manchu ᠰᡳᠯᡝ (sile, “soup”). Compare also Turkish şölen, which is a Mongolic loan.
Noun
[edit]шөл • (šöl) (Mongolian spelling ᠱᠥᠯᠦ (šölü))
Derived terms
[edit]- шөл гаргах (šöl gargax), шөл уух (šöl uux, “to slaughter cattle”, literally “to throw soup, to drink soup”)
