[edit]Inherited from Old Ruthenian щенѧ (ščenja), from Old East Slavic щенѧ (ščenę), from Proto-Slavic *ščenę. Compare Polish szczenię, Ukrainian щеня́ (ščenjá), Russian щено́к (ščenók).
