[edit]Probably of Oghur origin from Proto-Turkic *sīĺ (“wedge, tooth”) + -е (-e) (diminutive suffix). Compare Serbo-Croatian шѝљег (“male lamb”) (dialectal). Akin to the Turkish borrowing Bulgarian шиш (šiš, “skewer”) (Turkish şiş), Chuvash шăл (šăl, “tooth”).
