[edit]Possibly a Baltic loanword. Compare Latvian sēbrs (“friend”), Lithuanian sėbras (“companion”). Proto-Finnic *sëpra may be borrowed from the same Baltic root.
Alternatively, borrowed from Russian шабёр (šabjór).
