From Old East Slavic чета (četa, troop, multitude, community), from Proto-Slavic *četa, cognate with Czech četa, Serbo-Croatian чета, Bulgarian чета (četa), possibly Latin caterva. Also akin to Russian чета (četa, couple, pair; match).
