Inherited from Old East Slavic тьмьнъ (tĭmĭnŭ), from Proto-Slavic *tьmь̀nъ / *tь̏mьnъ. Cognate with Russian тёмный (tjómnyj) and Ukrainian те́мний (témnyj).
