Tuvan
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From херек (xerek, “need”) + жен (jen, “woman”). This term was created during the Soviet era to replace earlier херээжок (xereejok, “woman; woman of low social status”, literally “needless”), presumably due to its negative connotations that went against the socialist ideal of gender quality at the time.[1] The component жен is a borrowing from Russian жена (žena, “wife”).
