[edit]Inherited from Old Slovak chvíľa, chvieľa, from Old High German wīla, from Proto-Germanic *hwīlō. Cognate with Slovak chvíľa (“while, moment”). Semantically, possibly a semantic loan from Serbo-Croatian време/vreme.
