From Proto-Mordvinic *uśkə, inherited from Proto-Finno-Permic *waśke~*wäśkä (some kind of metal; copper). Cognate with Finnish vaski (copper), Hungarian vas (iron), Eastern Khanty вӑӽ (wăḥ, iron).
