Bashkir

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Turkic *teb (time; initial, early).

Compare to Tatar тәү (täw, initial, first); Southern Altai тем (tem, time), Shor тем (tem, time), Tuvan теппиже (teppije, ahead of time, before due time).

Alternatively, Akhmetyanov suggests derivation from a hypothesized *täg (initial, first), citing Kyrgyz тек (tek, origin, social background).
