Inherited from Bulgar طخر (toxur, nine),[1] itself inherited from Proto-Turkic *tokuŕ (nine).[2][3]

Cognate with Khalaj toqquz, Turkish dokuz, Uzbek toʻqqiz, Bashkir туғыҙ (tuğıź) and Yakut тоҕус (toğus).
