[edit]Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic тъщета (tŭšteta), from Proto-Slavic *tъščeta, a derivative of *tъščь (whence то́щий (tóščij)) + *-ota.
Further back, from Proto-Indo-European *tweskʷ- (“desert, barren”). Compare Sanskrit तुच्छ (tuccha, “empty, vain”), Latin tesqua (“desert”).
