From Proto-Permic *turin, from Proto-Finno-Permic *tarna, ultimately borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tŕ̥nam, from Proto-Indo-European *tr̥nós (compare Sanskrit तृण (tṛṇa, grass, herb). Cognates include Finnish taarna.

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian турун (turun).
