From Proto-Turkic *tur- (“to stand”). Cognate with Kazakh тұру (tūru), Kyrgyz туруу (turuu), Kumyk турмакъ (turmaq), Azerbaijani durmaq, Turkish durmak, Khakas турарға (turarğa), Shor турарға, Western Yugur tur-, etc.

Verb

турар • (turar) (stem тур-)

1. to stand, get up

   Кажаада эзерлиг аът тур. ― Kajaada ezerlig àt tur. ― A saddled horse is standing in the corral.

2. (auxiliary, + -п) Used to form the habitual aspect for most verbs, including when the subject's physical position is unimportant or unknown.

   Ол бо школада ажылдап турар. ― Ol bo şkolada ajıldap turar. ― He works at this school (in the past, now and probably also will in the future).

3. (auxiliary, тур + -п) Used to form the progressive tense for most verbs, including when the subject's physical position is unimportant or unknown.

   Телефон ажылдавайн тур. ― Telefon ajıldavayn tur. ― The telephone is not working.

   Тывалап өөренип алыксап тур мен. ― Tıvalap öörenip alıksap tur men. ― I want to learn Tuvan (in this moment).
