From Proto-Turkic *tur- (to stand). Cognate with Kazakh тұру (tūru), Kyrgyz туруу (turuu), Kumyk турмакъ (turmaq), Azerbaijani durmaq, Turkish durmak, Khakas турарға (turarğa), Shor турарға, Western Yugur tur-, etc.
