[edit]Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic тождьство (toždĭstvo). Calque of Latin identitās (literally “sameness”), from Church Slavonic тожде (tožde), from Old Church Slavonic тъжде (tŭžde, “the same”). Compare Russian то́же (tóže), -ество (-estvo).
