Etymology
[edit]From *tegiš "due, payable; appropriate", verb stem *tegiš- "to exchange goods", from Proto-Turkic *dẹg- (“touch”).
Cognate with Bashkir тейеш (teyeş, “must”), Tatar тиеш (tiyeş, “must”), Kyrgyz тийиш (tiyiş, “must”), Uyghur تېگىش (tëgish, “must”), Khakas тізіс (tìzìs). Also compare Karakhanid [script needed] (tegiš, “due, payable to”); Uzbek tegish (“a share payable to smb”), Turkish değiş (“worthiness”), Karachay-Balkar тийишли (tiyişli, “required, appropriate”), Kumyk тийишли (tiyişli, “required, appropriate”), etc.
