Etymology

From *tegiš "due, payable; appropriate", verb stem *tegiš- "to exchange goods", from Proto-Turkic *tẹg- (“touch”).

Immediately cognate with Tatar тиеш (tiyeş, “must”), Kazakh тиіс (tiıs, “must”), Kyrgyz тийиш (tiyiş, “must”), Southern Altai тийиш (tiyiš, “meeting, goal”) Uyghur تېگىش (tëgish, “must”).
