Inherited from Old East Slavic темьанъ (temĭanŭ), from Old Church Slavonic темьꙗнъ (temĭjanŭ), from Ancient Greek θῡμίαμα (thūmíama, incense for smoking), from θῡμιάω (thūmiáō, to burn incense, to burn, to smoke (something)), ultimately derived from Proto-Indo-European *dʰuh₂mós (smoke) (cognate with Russian дым (dym, smoke), Lithuanian dū́mas (smoke), Latin fūmus (smoke)), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewh₂- (to smoke).
