From Proto-Turkic *dẹrek (poplar). Derivation from Persian درخت (deraxt, tree) has also been suggested. Cognate with Kazakh терек (terek), Southern Altai терек (terek), Bashkir тирәк (tirək), Kumyk терек (terek, tree) ,Uzbek terak, Uyghur терәк (tërek), Khakas тирек (tirek), Chulym тӓрӓк (täräk, poplar), Shor терек, Tuvan терек (terek), Yakut тирэх (tireq, poplar), etc.
