Etymology

Inherited from Old East Slavic твьрдь (tvĭrdĭ), from Proto-Slavic *tvьrdь. Cognate with Old Church Slavonic тврьдь (tvrĭdĭ, citadel, base, firmament) and archaic Bulgarian твърд (tvǎrd, earth, sky, citadel, firmament). Compare also твёрдый (tvjórdyj, hard, firm).
