From таш (taš, stone) +‎ бака (baka, frog). Compare with Kazakh тасбақа (tasbaqa), Bashkir ташбаҡа (taşbaqa), Tatar ташбака (taşbaqa), Kyrgyz ташбака (taşbaka), Uzbek toshbaqa, Uyghur تاشپاقا (tashpaqa, turtle, tortoise).
