[edit]From Persian چای (čây), Sanskrit चाय (cāya), from Sinitic 茶 (MC drae, “tea”).
Cognate with Southern Altai, Kyrgyz, Karakalpak чай (çay), Kazakh шай (şai), Karachay-Balkar шай (şay), Tatar чәй (çäy), Uzbek choy, Uyghur چاي (chay), Azerbaijani, Crimean Tatar, Turkish, Turkmen çay (“tea”), etc.
