сырмы
Appearance
Western Mari
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Mari *šŭrmə. Cognates include Eastern Mari шурмаҥше (šurmaŋše). About the further origin of the word exist two theories:
- From Proto-Uralic [Term?]. Cognates include Komi-Zyrian сер (śer, “marten”) and Udmurt сёр (śor, “marten”).
- Borrowed from Baltic, compare Lithuanian šermuonėlis (“stoat”) and Latvian sermulis (“stoat”).
