[edit]Compound of съпаси́ (sŭpasí, “save”) + богъ (bogŭ, “god”),[1][2][3][4] equivalent to Proto-Slavic *sъ(n) + *pasti + *bogъ.
Formed in the Christian period among the Eastern Slavs on the territory of Kievan Rus. Also compare the etymological development of English goodbye.
