Etymology

[edit]

Melnychuk posits a borrowing from Middle High German schamen (to feel ashamed).[1] Alternatively derived from Proto-Slavic *‑xa‑menǫti ,[2][3] which Melnychuk finds less convincing.[1] Compare Belarusian схамяну́цца (sxamjanúcca).
