[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic супостатъ (supostatŭ), from Proto-Slavic *sǫpostatъ. Compare су- (su-), по- (po-), стать (statʹ). Cognate with Lithuanian stótas (“body build”), Avestan 𐬯𐬙𐬁𐬙𐬀 (stāta, “standing”), Latin praestātus (“having excelled”), Ancient Greek ἀντιστάτης (antistátēs, “enemy”).
