- Boev: Of Oghur (or another Turkic) origin, cognate with Chuvash сăхман (săhman, “robe”), Hungarian szokmány (“overcoat”). Further comparable with Bashkir сәкмән (səkmən, “coat”), Tatar чикмән (çikmän, “winter coat”), Southern Altai чекмен (čekmen, “caftan”) (whence Russian чекмень (čekmenʹ)).
- Mladenov: Native Slavic term akin to Bulgarian су́кно (súkno, “floaty fabric”), сукня́ (suknjá, “skirt”).
- Wandering word.
