Etymology

From Proto-Permic *sɔzar, from Proto-Finno-Permic *sasare, ultimately borrowed from an Iranian language, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swásā (compare Sanskrit स्वसृ (svasṛ)). Cognates include Eastern Mari шӱжар (šüžar), Western Mari шыжар (šyžar) and Erzya сазор (sazor).

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian созор (sozor, flaw in the fabric).
