Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic соуѥсловьѥ (sujeslovĭje), possibly mediated via Russian суесло́вие (sujeslóvije), calque of Ancient Greek ματαιολογία (mataiología). Equivalent to суе- (sue-, futile) +‎ сло́во (slóvo, word, speech) +‎ -ие (-ie).
