Etymology

Inherited from Old East Slavic смолжь (smolžĭ), from Proto-Slavic *(s)mъlžь. Cognate with Czech mlž, Polish małż, Polabian mouz. The Russian смолж (smolž) and Ukrainian смовж (smovž) were discontinued.
