Inherited from late Old Slovak slovník. By surface analysis, слово (slovo) +‎ -нїк (-njik). Cognate with Belarusian сло́ўнік (slóŭnik), Czech and Slovak slovník, Polish słownik, Russian сло́вник (slóvnik) and Ukrainian сло́вник (slóvnyk).
