Etymology

Of expressive origin, from Proto-Slavic *skymъ (howl, wail) + -тя (-tja). Per Mladenov, probably further related to Ancient Greek σκῠ́λᾰξ (skúlax, dog), Old Norse skvala (to squeal, bawl).
