From Proto-Mordvinic *čänžə, probably borrowed from Proto-Balto-Slavic *źansís, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰh₂éns (compare Lithuanian žąsìs and Latvian zoss). Cognates include Erzya шенже (šenže).
