Inherited from Old East Slavic сельскъіи (selĭskŷii), from Proto-Slavic *sèlьskъ. By surface analysis, село́ (seló, village) +‎ -ский (-skij, adjective-forming suffix). Cognate with Belarusian се́льскі (sjélʹski) and Ukrainian сільськи́й (silʹsʹkýj).
