Etymology

Inherited from Old East Slavic свинꙑи (svinyi), from Proto-Slavic *svinъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *swīˀnas, from Proto-Indo-European *suHiHnos, from *suH-. Equivalent to свинѧ́ (svinjá) +‎ -ный (-nyj). Cognate with Russian свино́й (svinój).
