Inherited from Old Slovak robotník, from Proto-Slavic *orbotьnikъ. By surface analysis, робота (robota) +‎ -нїк (-njik). Cognates include Belarusian рабо́тнік (rabótnik), Russian рабо́тник (rabótnik), Slovak robotník and Ukrainian робітни́к (robitnýk).
