Tajik

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Classical Persian رَحْمَت (rahmat, mercy, compassion, commiseration), from Arabic رَحْمَة (raḥma). Sense 1 may be a calque of French merci (thanks, literally mercy), whence Russian мерси (mersi, thanks), and is widespread in usage across post-Soviet Central Asia. Compare Uzbek rahmat, Kazakh рахмет (raxmet)/рақмет (raqmet), Kyrgyz ыракмат (ırakmat), Bashkir рәхмәт (rəxmət), Tatar рәхмәт (räxmät).
