From (Balkan) Proto-Slavic *raponъ, of substrate origin. Compare Ancient Greek ῥάφανος (rháphanos, cabbage), Latin Raphanus (radish). Equivalent to Човек от стрелча (Čovek ot strelča, radish) (dialectal) +‎ -он (-on).
