Etymology

[edit]

From earlier пеклува́тися (pekluvátysja), from Old Ruthenian пеклова́тисꙗ (peklovátisja, to care about, to take care of), from Middle Polish piekłować się.[1] By surface analysis, пе́кло (péklo) +‎ -ува́ти (-uváty) +‎ -ся (-sja). For the semantic variety compare Polish pieklić się (to be angry), dialectal Belarusian пекелява́ць (pjekjeljavácʹ, to suffer), Slovene peklíti (to trouble, to torment), Kashubian péklëc są (to suffer, to plug away, to work hard), Old Ruthenian пеклованье (peklovanʹje, grief, sadness).
