Inherited from Old Slovak potrebovať, from Proto-Slavic *poterbovati. By surface analysis, по- (po-) +‎ требовац (trebovac) or потреба (potreba) +‎ -овац (-ovac). Cognates include Belarusian патрабава́ць (patrabavácʹ), Czech potřebovat, Polish potrzebować, Russian потре́бовать (potrébovatʹ), Serbo-Croatian потребоватиpotrebovati, Slovak potrebovať and Ukrainian потребува́ти (potrebuváty).
