From Proto-Samic *ponnē, from North Germanic (compare Old Norse botn).

Related to Hungarian váll and Finnish olka. Compare Skolt Sami påʹnn, Kildin Sami поаннҍ (pånn’), Ter Sami ponne and Northern Sami bodni.
