Inherited from Proto-Slavic *poltьnьce. By surface analysis, полотно́ (polotnó, canvas) +‎ -це (-ce). Compare Old Church Slavonic платьньце (platĭnĭce) and Sanskrit पट (paṭa, cloth, garment).
